Enough with the Shawn Watson Bashing

It seems no matter where I turn the last couple of weeks, I've read slam after slam on Shawn Watson, and while he's certainly shouldn't be immune to criticism, it's gotten old and nearly pointless at this point. Yes, we know what happened in the Big XII Championship game.  Criticize him for not changing quarterbacks if you will, but when you have a running quarterback who's has injuries to both feet, you've got an issue with what you can do.

And let's not bring up his previous championship game performances either; those were different teams that had their own offensive issues.  2005 was a Colorado team that mailed it in, while the 2009 Husker offense had their own problems with injuries at quarterback and running back.

I'm not praising Watson at all, but the constant chirping has gone far enough at this point. It's no longer original, and pointless. Do you really think it's going to encourage Miami to hire Watson?  Do you really think it's going to convince Bo Pelini to fire Watson?  Do you really think it's going to convince Harvey Perlman or Tom Osborne to force Pelini's hand?

I just don't see the point, other than bitching and moaning.  What have I missed?

  2. Your absolutely right, get over it, and move on. I trust that Coach Pelini will get a handle on the offense as well.

  3. i'm with you......enough is enough.
i'm not one to blame coaches either....did the players pitch an egg? Did Wats call in for 7 fumbles?

  4. Oh I'm sorry Mike, those comments and criticism about the coaches bother you? But let’s be honest here, what makes you think that next season anything will be different? Will next season bring more stupid time outs, stupid play selection, poor game preparation (SDSU), childish sideline antics and “out and out” whining by the coaching staff? Go ahead and bury your head in the sand and hope it goes away. I can excuse the coaches to a point but HC Pelini in his fourth season better start making better decision both pre-game and at game-time. Next season the criticism won’t be direct at Watson but directly at Pelini!!!

  5. Agreed. It's a little silly. We have one qb with 2 bad legs, another with a tendency to put the ball on the turf, and a third with a bum throwing arm. There were a ton of variables many Nebraska fans are forgetting. I remember after Callahan left how many of us prayed that Watson would stay and not leave. Many predicted an exit after his first year with Pelini...he stayed. So should we. It's hard to get up for every game...how many of us had butterflies and bubbling excitement before the SDSU game? Few. Just like players, sometimes coaches feel a little less excitement for certain opponents. It happens, move on. Bottom line, we've had a great 3 year run with Bo and Wats and anyone who thinks a different OC could have done better is someone who doesn't know football too much. I wish all the people so vocal about Watson's departure would actuall demonstrate the same passion when we're playing at lincoln. Bo is right when he criticized our lack of passion at some games. Shut it, and get loud FOR BIG RED!!!

  6. I agree with the only dissenter here. Next year better show smarter coaching or Bo will be the target. In Watson's defense, if you look at what he was able to do under Callahan with Joe Ganz, maybe the real problem here is that his strengths are not well suited to what Bo wants to do and he may have more success elsewhere.

  7. Mike
It'up to Bo at this time as the CEO of the football program. It's his responsibility to right the ship on the offensive side of the ball. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome. Bo will figure how to stop the madness.

  8. Shawn Watson is awful. Sorry if you don't see it that way. But even in wins, he's had terrible gameplans and playcalling. With Watson running our offense next year, we'll be lucky to go 0.500 in the Big 10.

  9. Watson has been part of a coaching staff that has produced 30 wins in their first 3 seasons.....it looks like it could get better from here. So those of you that chose to beat up on our coaches, I suggest that you take your pick of any team within 500 miles, and put your support there ! We don't want you or your misguided opinions....go away !

  10. Kind of funny that you say to stop bashing Watson. And you list multiple reasons why he is being bashed. Yet you offer no argument to support him in any way. This is the most pointless, waste-of-space post ever. I say bash away

  11. Actually, I did offer several reasons why I think Watson is getting overly criticized, especially with respect to championship games.

And I'm not hear to praise Watson either. He's got his issues. My point is that some fans are reacting like a Pavlovian dog when they hear the name Watson. Dirk Chatelain's article a few weeks ago was a hatchet job, and frankly, his editors at the World-Herald should have been embarassed to put it in the paper.

  12. OK, everyone quit pointing out the obvious about Watson. Husker Mike has decreed that enough is enough.
He made an obvious call on Callys unfitness and that now empowers him to pronounce judgment on what is and isn't permitted in the realm of Nebraska football discussion.

  13. rizecGood advice, enough said about Watson. Hopefully his coaching will mature.

  14. Amen... I'm sick of the bitching and crying. Huskernation has more character than this. I also think it's a small group that utilize message boards and comment sections to post their anonymous complaints. I have an idea for all those folks, call the coaches and set up a meeting to tell them how they should be doing it. I'm sure they will be receptive.

Or, maybe TO will give the job to them...

  15. The spread offense won't win any championships at Nebraska by itself: Whoever is OC, they need to diversify from this limited approach. It's been painful to watch.

  16. It seems that you have missed everything Mike. You are making a blanket excuse based on complete generalities. Watson does not have the adaptability to be an offensive coordinator. The guy doesn't think on his feet very well. He can draw up a plan on paper, but implementing and sustaining it effectively for any length of time is another story. The last two seasons have proved this point. His inability to get plays in on time, recognize what is working and what isn't, and to adjust to the opposing defense's has gone on too long to think it will ever change. Bo is not without blame. His sense of loyalty to his coaches is noble, but he owes his players, the school, and the fans a lot more than sticking with someone who isn't going to improve. Watson has had his shot. It isn't working. He has had two season's worth of defenses that should have won championships. He didn't deliver. It is time for a change.

  17. Who's dropping generalities? I think you actually proved my point.

  18. So Husker Mike, amuse us. Show some more man love for Watson and defend the brilliant offensive performance in the bowl game. Dazzle us with the improvements made with Martinez during the 3 weeks available before the bowl game. Isn't Watson also the QB coach?
No, those of us in reality have not forgotten your pretentious misguided post dictating that fans what may or may not be said.
Your comments on Dirk Chatelain's article show you have lost your objectivity on this subject.
