Sports Illustrated: Callahan a "Potentially Colossal Mistake" for Nebraska

SI's Stuart Mandel, in today's column, thinks that "(Bill) Callahan's hiring was a potentially colossal mistake". Mandel agrees that Nebraska's program needed some modernization. However, he also says that Frank Solich is showing just that at Ohio, and that Callahan's NFL credentials and NFL experience may be irrelevant in the college game.

Oh, and Steve Pederson's other 2 candidates (Dave Wannstedt and Houston Nutt) also get some negative attention in the 'ol mailbag.

I think any person that understood coaching would know that two years of any level of head coach experience would not prepare you for the Nebraska experience. When it became clear that Frank was let go to glorify Steve Pedersons ego, Steve had to look like he had a plan, and Callahan had a Super Bowl loss on his resume. (How good was the AFC that year, and who on that team had career years that they have yet to repeat?)

Time will tell.

Your site sucks!

"Time will tell"? Yes it will.

As for "Your site sucks!": Thanks! Now crawl back and join the rest of the inbreds at HuskerPedia. Talk about lame; the best comment you could come up with was "you suck"???

Time will tell. If that is the arguement, then we should have given the coaching staff Frank assembled a chance. They took the same bunch of kids from 7-7 to 10-3, so apparently they could do something where Callahan just throws up his hands and says, "These aren't my recruits?!?".

Guess what, they weren't Barney Cotton's either and his offense looked better than Callahans. So I would say to someone who as artistic as "you suck", 3rd grade has an opening in the first row.

I usually look but don't touch, but it appears that the old saying still applies, "the truth hurts".

Between the arguements of "you suck" and the later, I wonder which one requires a deeper level of thinking? Easy answer, except if you're the "you suck" guy.

Well, that Huskerpedia user finally learned he can repetitively post comments, so I had to shut off anonymous comments.

Huskerpedia guy was right. Your site isn't very good.

Consider this:
Callahan led the Raiders to the 2002 AFC Championship Game and a berth in Super Bowl XXXVII in his first season as a head coach, making him just the fourth rookie head coach in NFL history to do so finishing 13-6. Callahan is the third Raiders head coach to win an AFC West title and to get into the conference championship game in his first full season. Only Art Shell, 1990 and John Madden, 1969 have accomplished this feat. Under Callahan's guidance, the Raiders led the NFL in passing for the first time in team history and led the league in total offense for just the second time in team history.

From 1990-1994, Callahan was offensive line coach at the University of Wisconsin. He started at the same time as Barry Alvarez and helped build the Wisconsin program. They were 1-10 their first season and three years later they were 10-1-1. Cosgrove started the same year at Wisconsin (1990) and also helped build the program from the ground up.

1 win to 10 wins at a bottom feeding Big 10 school in 3 years.

Nah.. they can't coach.

_____________

from SF Chronicle archive -
From the day Gruden left, Callahan's candidacy received vocal support from many players. They got their wish. "This is something that those of us who have been here hoped feverishly would happen," fullback Jon Ritchie said yesterday. "He is one of the best teachers/coaches in the game. . . And he is a great X's and O's guy."

The Kool Aid drinkers are the ones whining for Frank Solich to come back.

Not all of them, just one guy in Lincoln, apparantly with a lot of free time.

Yeah, Callahan went to the Super Bowl...and he hasn't won a game worth talking about since.

Even as a Husker fan, I can admit this program is in trouble.

I also believe that if NU has a weak record this year and Pederson schedules another D-II lightweight, we could see the sellout streak end early next season.
